[Magatama]
Magatama is one of the jewels developed uniquely in Japan and is considered to be one of the three sacred treasures. As far back as the Jomon period, magatama beads made from processed bones and shells have been excavated, and magatama beads made of Amazonite have been discovered during the unwritten Jomon period from the 6th century BC to the 3rd century BC. It is written in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and depicts magatama being offered as a tribute to Amaterasu in Japanese mythology.
There are various theories about the shape of magatama, such as motifs of a fetus, the moon, or an animal's fang, but nothing is known for sure.
However, from the excavated examples and documents that have been excavated so far, it appears that it had a uniquely Japanese religious meaning of borrowing the power of the natural world and spirits to protect oneself.
It is said that the magatama culture disappeared with the introduction of Buddhism, but magatama beads are still sold as amulets at shrines that enshrine Shinto gods.
